The small town of Sancerre appears as the archetypal, bucolic French hilltop village. Located in the eastern section of the Loire Valley, Sancerre is dominated by plantings of the Sauvignon Blanc grape. The world famous white wines of the region tend to be sleekly structured with acidity and citrus, mineral and herb aromatics. While the white wines are renown, the Sancerre AOP also produces light Pinot Noir-based reds and rosé wines.
With Sancerre’s three distinct soil types—Terres Blanches, Caillottes, and Silex—a multitude of wine styles exist and producers often own vineyards in each. We visit family producers, both large and small and taste the full range of wines.
The smaller wine region of Pouilly-Fumé is just across the river and clients may opt to visit a vineyard here too. Wines are exclusively white and with famous minerality.
Lunch is enjoyed in a winemaking village restaurant or in the medieval town of Sancerre, and there is the chance to visit a traditional cheese shop.
