Chenin blanc, often called Pineau de La Loire, is a remarkable grape, able to produce wines both still and sparkling and from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. It is the emblematic grape of the middle Loire, where it has been grown for centuries. Several stories link the grape to St. Martin of Tours, who is said to have cultivated it in the area around 370 AD.
This tour concentrates on visits to Vouvray, Montlouis sur Loire and Amboise, all on the River Loire and where the appellation rules dictate that Chenin Blanc is the only white grape grown. During several tastings you will be able to experience the full range of Chenin wines at a range of producers from cooperative ventures to small family wineries. You will be astounded by the range and quality of the wine produced in the Loire Valley, wines that can be kept for years, if you can resist the temptation to drink them earlier.
Lunch will be taken at a restaurant in the area and we take the opportunity both to look at the production facilities in the winery and the vinesout in the vineyard. There will be plenty of opportunities to buy wine. This is one tour where it is definitely better to be driven than to drive!
