Most people have heard of organic food, but not everyone will realise that wine can also be produced organically. Other terms often used in connection to “Natural” wine-making include Biodynamic, sustainably produced, sulphite free and Vegan wines, together with more vague terms such as “environmentally friendly”.
Despite the challenges inherent in these forms of cultivation, the Loire Valley is increasingly turning to organic and biodynamic winemaking. We have made a point of getting to know a number of these producers and are delighted to offer a tour featuring their work and, of course, their delicious wines.
In France organic wine production has tripled in the last ten years and now more than 10% of vineyards are in organic production and nearly 20% are in the process of conversion from conventional growing.

How are organically-farmed natural wines different and what does it mean to the wine lover? Most importantly, naturally made wines taste better. They have more subtle and complex aromas.
They are usually lower in alcohol and lighter in body but have more precise and true fruit characteristics, complemented by flavours derived from the soil and subsoil.
Natural wines have better acidity, even in abnormally hot or dry years, and possess a longer and more complex finish that stimulates the palate rather than dulls it. Consequently, they tend to complement food in a much more pleasing way, which is, of course, one of the most important roles of wine.
Additionally, there are important environmental concerns, as well as issues of globalization and standardization which are addressed by these methods.
