The wines of Cheverny deserve to be as well-known as the privately-owned chateau, which is a popular visit in the heart of the Sologne region of forests and lakes.
Location: 24 communities in the Loir-et-Cher department south of Blois.
Surface Area: 574 hectares /1,418 acres
Soil: Mostly sand and clay soils of the Sologne, but also sand and gravel terraces of the Loire and in places, limestone.
Climate: Continental, but influenced by the huge forests that surround it, and by the Loire
Annual Production: Approximately 27,000 hl / 713,264 gallons, including red, rosé and white wines.
Grape Varieties: Red: Blends of Gamay and Pinot noir, plus some Cabernet france and Côt (Malbec). Whites: a blend of Sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay.
Red Appearance: Brilliant cherry red Nose: Red fruits and when Pinot noir is the main grape, animal and spice(cloves) notes. Flavours: Fresh, fruit flavors with soft tannins; Pinot noir offers an extra dimension of spiciness with a liquorice finish. The reds can be cellared for many years.
White Appearance: Pale yellow with a hint of green. Nose: Gooseberry and blackcurrent shoots; sometimes spice. Flavors: Blackcurrant shoots and exotic fruits. Chardonnay adds roundness to the Sauvignon.
Rosé Appearance: Salmon tints. Nose: Red fruits and spice. Flavours: fresh, fruity, rhubarb and spice. Perfect summer wine.
